Simply outdoors. For you, too!

In Denmark there are over 1000 free, public trekking places (from meadow for tents up to oasis like sites) and at more than 500 places there are free public shelters to stay there for up to two nights.

They allow local microadventures but also low barrier and socially inclusive, sustainable tourism in nature and near cities: Usable for local kindergardens and schools but also as a place to sleep on sporty bikepacking tours or slower long distance bike travels or hiking.

Trekking places with shelters are also lovely here, not only in Scandinavia!

The screenshot shows the creation of my 3D-shelter-prototype in the free software Blender version 5.x. It is based on the geometry of EPAL-pallets and wooden beams that are locally sourceable as trashed packaging. Download of the model: shelter_biepal_v001.blend

In Dänemark gibt es insgesamt über 1000 kostenlose, öffentliche Trekkingplätze (von Zeltwiese bis Wohlfühloase) und an über 500 Orten kostenlose, öffentliche Shelter-Hütten für bis zu zwei Übernachtungen.

Sie ermöglichen lokale Mikroabenteuer, aber auch niedrigschwelligen, sozial inklusiven, naturnahen und nachhaltigen Tourismus: Als Ziel von Ausflügen von lokalen Kitas und Schulen ebenso, wie als Übernachtungsort bei sportlichen Bikepacking- oder gemächlicheren Rad-Wander-Touren.

...Trekkingplätze mit Shelter-Hütten können auch bei uns tolle, kostenlose, öffentliche Infrastruktur sein. Nicht nur in Skandinavien!

Minimal shelter-huts are possible projects, even for small groups of people. We need just the support of the local community or people who donate a public place, to build in public. But what we build is part of a european bike-hike-infrastructure network. Every network begins at one place.

Do you like the idea as much as i do? Is here a good place for shelters? Would you like to help building them? Are there good old materials in the local area that can be reused, to build more climatefriendly?

That are questions i now ask at dirfferent occasions and with post in the fediverse (more info on that at Paths and Contact).

Minimale Shelter-Hütten sind umsetzbare Projekte, auch für kleine Gruppen von Menschen. Wir brauchen fast nur die Unterstützung der lokalen Kommune oder von Menschen, die ein öffentlich zugängliches Stück Land spenden, um dort einen öffentlichen Trekkingplatz einzurichten.

Wir bauen einen wichtigen Teil eines europäischen Rad-Wander-Infrastruktur Netzwerks. Und: Jedes Netzwerk beginnt an einem konkreten Ort.

Gefällt dir die Idee so gut wie mir? Gibt es hier einen geeigneten Platz für Shelter? Möchtest du mithelfen welche zu bauen? Gibt es gute Altmaterialien in der Nähe, die wir klimafreundlich wieder/weiter nutzen könnten?

Das sind Fragen, die ich nun bei verschiedenen Gesprächen und auch über den Fediverse-Account stelle (mehr dazu bei Wege und Kontakt).

I am looking for a public place in the regions "Ostwestfalen-Lippe", "Münsterland" and "Osnabrücker Land". In may and june an "art in public space" participative shelter construction site should be happening there. After this it should stay as a free, public trekking place.

In the two months i want to build shelter huts together with local supporters. Re/using local/regional ressources (like wood) as much as possible. At "Construction Site Talks" with music different initiatives may present or example their journeys by foot or by bike.

We create a permanent free trekking place allowed for short visits. It is not temporary art. It is art as public infrastructure.

How a construction site may look like shows the impressive video from german public TV station NDR. It was filmed in Bargum in northern Germany:

The local "rural youth" organization has built two shelters in 72 hours, supported by and as a challenge given to them by the local authorities...

Ich suche in den Regionen "Ostwestfalen-Lippe", "Münsterland" oder "Osnabrücker Land" nach einer öffentlich zugänglichen, geeigneten Fläche, die anschließend ein kostenloser Trekkingplatz werden soll. Im Mai / Juni 2026 soll dort als "Kunst im öffentlichen Raum" eine Mitmach-Shelter-Baustelle stattfinden.

In den zwei Monaten möchte ich dort mit lokalen Unterstützer*innen Shelter-Hütten bauen. Dabei sollen möglichst viele lokale Ressourcen (wie Holz) wieder/weiter genutzt werden. Bei "Baustellengesprächen" mit Musik sollen verschiedene Initiativen z.B. von ihren Reisen zu Fuß oder mit dem Rad berichten.

Es entsteht ein dauerhaft kostenlos für Kurzzeit-Übernachtungen erlaubter Trekkingplatz. Es ist keine temporäre Kunstinstallation. Es ist Kunst als öffentliche Infrastruktur.

Wie so eine Baustelle aussehen kann, zeigt der beeindruckende Videobericht des NDR unten. Er wurde in Bargum in Norddeutschland gefilmt:

There are several european foot- and bikeroutes through the regions Münsterland, Ostwestfalen-Lippe and Osnabrücker Land:

Eurovelo 2
From west to east: Netherlands - Münster - Detmold - Polonia.

Eurovelo 3
From southwest to northeast: Belgium - Münster - Osnabrück - Denmark.

E1
From north to south through Lippisches Bergland, Teutoburger Wald and Eggegebirge.

E11
From west to east through the Wiehengebirge: Starting in Rheine via Osnabrück to Porta Westfalica.

Also several shorter but also multiday hiking routes exist: For example the Hermannsweg through Bielefeld and the Eggeweg (also part of european route E1) near Paderborn.

Durch das Münsterland, Ostwestfalen-Lippe und das Osnabrücker Land gehen mehrere europäische Fernradwege und Fernwanderwege:

Von West nach Ost: Niederlande - Münster - Detmold - Polen.

Von Südwest nach Nordost: Belgien - Münster - Osnabrück - Dänemark.

Von Nord nach Süd durch das Lippische Bergland, den Teutoburger Wald und das Eggegebirge.

E11
Von West nach Ost durch das Wiehengebirge: Von Rheine über Osnabrück nach Porta Westfalica.

Auch mehrtägig erwanderbare Wege durch die Mittelgebirge gibt es, wie den Hermannsweg durch Bielefeld und den anschließenden Eggeweg (über den auch der E1 führt) nahe Paderborn.
